GCSE Maths Resits - What You Need To Know
What you need to know about GCSE maths resits 2024.
Approximately 28% of students did not achieve a grade 4 or higher in their GCSE maths exam this year1 and will need to resit the exam. If you are considering resitting your GCSE maths exam here's what you need to know.
Why might you resit your GCSE maths?
- A grade 4 is recognised as a standard pass at GCSE and is the minimum requirement that students must reach. If you have not gained a grade 4 in your GCSE maths you will either need to resit it or take a functional skills qualification instead.
- If you have gained higher than a grade 4 but you are not happy with your grade you may choose to resit the exam to try to improve your grade.
- If you plan to go on to study A-Levels or another course but did not meet the minimum grade requirement you may be asked to resit the exam. Always check with the school or college as they may be flexible if you have only missed the grade by a few marks.
The Resit Process
1. Speak to your teachers in school.
Talk to your teachers, they know you and they understand the system. They will be able to guide you through the process of booking and preparing for a resit. You have time to consider your options, the deadline for entries is Friday 4th October 2024.
2. Prepare for your resit.
If you are continuing in education in School or Sixth Form College you may be able to access classes in those establishments which will support you as you prepare for your resit. You may also consider seeking additional support from an outside source such as an online resource.
If you are moving into an appenticeship or traineeship programme the provider may be able to offer support as you work to pass the exam but you may need to consider seeking support from a tutor or online resource.
In 2023 just 16% of students resitting GCSE maths in England passed with a grade 4 or higher2. Using an online resource such as BOFAmaths® could help you improve your chances of achieving a grade 4 or higher if you are resitting this year.
3. Resit the exam.
The dates for GCSE maths resits in 2024 are Wednesday 6th, Friday 8th and Monday 11th November.
4. Receive your results.
GCSE maths resit results will be announced Thursday 9th January 2025.
